THE HISTORY

The dream began in November 1985 when Jim Batchelor talked to other people about a softball league. An opening meeting was planned in December that resulted in seven teams eventually forming. Initially, there were only six gloves available. Jim bought out K Mart's stock of twelve gloves, more were sent from up north. Finally, on January 18th, there were enough to start the league, but even then one husband and wife shared a glove and shoes.

The men's league had players of 50+. The women's league had no age requirement until 1991.

Citrus Park softball was played Saturday mornings on a grassy area behind the Rec Hall. Today, horseshoes, bocce and volleyball are played there. A road crossed over right field, and pitchers had to make sure no cars were coming before they pitched. The first "Chickee Hut" consisted of a cooler of beer and a Barbeque located on the road in right field.

The second year, a new grass field was put in where softball is now played. Sand filled milk jugs were used to show the home run fence. This was changed with the installation of outfield fences in 1991 and 1993.

From that original start of seven teams, the interest and commitment to softball in Citrus Park has grown. It now includes more teams, bleachers, sun screens and a new "Tiki Hut" that meets current building codes and health standards. It still has the best tasting hotdogs in Florida, served with 7 condiments!
