Benefit For Gabby 2008

George Collins, Dennis Swan and "Fast" Eddie Harris put their hair on the line
for Gabby.
In all the years I have been coming to Citrus Park, I have never been
prouder of our residents. On Thursday, Jan 10, this community came out to
help Gabby, Phyllis' (works in the Office) grand daughter, who has been
diagnosed with CF. So far, $10,000.00 has been raised to help Gabby and her
Mom Tonya get through the huge medical costs involved. We have three new
bald heads, and I think George, Dennis and Eddie have never looked better.
Bake sales, donations for a silent auction, T shirt sales, clowns painting
faces, 5.00 haircuts and cash donations were just some of the ways money was
raised. The Snack Bar staff and all those who ran with the ball on this one
deserve a HUGE round of applause. Way to go Citrus Park!!!

Recent visitor to 10th St S. Thank you to Pat Estelle for forwarding this
picture to me, and to congrats to Karen Robbins for getting the opportunity to
take it.

Work on the new pool has started. It will be 4 foot deep with an 8 person "spa"
at one end. It will be available to all, but "scheduled water activities" will
have priority. I will find out if it will be a family or adult pool and post it
here.

John Fischer from the Department of Financial Services spoke to a full CH about
what the new Insurance Legislation means for us. Mr Fischer is also a mobile
home owner in Jamaica Bay. Here are the most pertinent points...
NOTE.. all of the following come into effect June 1st/07
- in the past, Citizens has not bought re-insurance, though they have been
charging customers the equivalent of it. That is now disallowed.
- Citizen's is no longer allowed to charge higher than other insurance
companies. They must now be competitive.
- If you renew or get a new policy before June 1, you may see an increase. You
will receive a reimbursement or adjustment after the 1st. Rates have been frozen
as of Dec 31/06 until June 1. If you have had your rates hiked, you will receive
a reimbursement or adjustment after June 1.
- Seasonal surcharges must be removed or reduced. Seasonal surcharges make up
approx 10% of your policy if you do not live in Florida year round.
- You will now have the option to not have wind damage in your policy.
- In the past, deductables have been approx 2 - 3 % of your policy. You will now
be able to ask for up to 10% as a deductable.
- Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny you coverage based on the
age of your unit. However, you can be denied based on the condition of your
unit.
- You will have the option to exclude content insurance or make it minimal.
- Allows you to pay in quarterly or semi annual installments, even with Citzen's.
- Prohibits excess profits (by State)... at this time "excess profits" have not
been defined.
- Requires notice of non-renewal to be 100 days or before June 1st, whichever
comes first.
- Insurance companies must file for rate hikes and get approval BEFORE passing
that on to the consumer.
- Insurance companies must pay or deny claims within 90 days or pay a 1 million
dollar fine per outstanding claim.
- In the past, to start a new insurance company that insures Mobile Homes, the
company was required to be bonded for 14 million dollars. Now, new companies may
start with 7 million and the State will co-bond the other 7 million dollars.
- You can not be cancelled before June 1st. Insurance companies are arguing that
non renewal or cancellation notices sent before Jan 31/06 should stand. The
State lawyers are stating that if the termination date is after Jan 31 and
before June 1, then it is null and void until November. This should be clarified
in a week or so.

Just a few of the many pictures taken on a day trip down US 41 to and on the way
to the Oasis Visitor Center in the Everglades. The pink bodied birds are Roseate
Spoonbills. They had come close to extinction, so it was a treat to see them.
